The History of Friar's Lodge
Friar's lodge and Friar's Street in which it is situated take their name from the ruined Carmelite Friary nearby. The Carmelite Order was founded by St. Berthold, on Mount Carmel in Palestine, in 1214. The friary, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, near Abbey Well in Kinsale, was founded by Robert Fitzrichard Balrain in 1334.Customer Reviews

Highly recommended, thank youPosted on gomostplacesVerified A lovely stay at Friar's Lodge We enjoyed two nights in mid-Oct. in a large, comfortable, double room. This hotel is very clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. It's an older, historic hotel that may seem at bit dated to some, but that's part of it's charm and character. Although we didn't make use of it, there is a comfortable, cozy lounge by the lobby where sherry is available. It's a quiet location and an easy stroll into the town centre. The inclusion of parking and delicious options for breakfast were bonus features. Definitely recommend and we would stay again.Posted on Southern SunshineVerified Charming Our hotel room was HUGE! It's an easy walk down into town, and the breakfast was lovely with a good variety of dishes. The furniture is, shall we say, vintage 1980? There is an electric kettle with tea, milk, and sugar. Friendly staff. Would stay here again.Posted on Robert WVerified Great, wheelchair-accessible premises (but up a short hill) Loved staying at the Friar's Lodge. Room was very nice and spacious. Breakfast was very good quality. Staff were very friendly and helpful. As a wheelchair user, I booked a ground floor room. The premises had no steps and the corridors were wide (for turning circles for wheelchairs), which was great. I suppose the only downside, and this is no reflection on the Friar's Lodge itself, is that it is located up a short hill from central Kinsale town. I had no problem getting up it in my powerchair, but you may need help getting up it in a manual wheelchair. 5/5Posted on traveling_with_kathyVerified Lovely Stay Lovely 2-night stay at the Friars Lodge. We were on a group tour. Breakfast buffet and made-to-order hot food. There is a small elevator. My sister and I shared a room with 2 beds. Both the room and bathroom were quite large compared to our Dublin hotel. We enjoyed our stay.Posted on Pamela SVerified Comfortable and convenient place to stay in the absolutely charming village of Kinsale. We absolutely LOVED our stay at the Friar's lodge. Super close to the downtown, but being a couple of streets out, it was very quiet. We booked a huge room, and it was so nice that they have an elevator. The parking right on site was super convenient. Great service, and tasty breakfast.Posted on Doug MVerified The Team Went Above and Beyond! The Friar's Lodge was perfect. The location gave us access to Kinsale. The rooms were spacious. What I really want to say is that Maureen went out of her way and above and beyond to help me out. I had a package delivered but messed up the delivery timing which was totally my fault. That didn't matter to Maureen, she made sure the package was returned by taking the time to print a label and deliver the package to a shipper. Thank you Maureen. If we ever come back to Kinsale, we are ABSOLUTELY going to stay with you. Posted on Denise MVerified Be prepared to pay more This reservation was made by another B&B on our behalf and we were told the room rate. Upon checkin, the room rate was confirmed. At checkout, we were charged a different rate and when I questioned the rate, the lady at reception was incredibly rude and said there’s no way because they don’t rent rooms at that rate. When I asked her to confirm, she said she wouldn’t call her manager because she knew she was right. The breakfast food is subpar, at best-most of the pastries on the bar are stale. The hot breakfast you can order is average. The location is great and this is why I gave them 3 stars.Posted on JeffVerified Friar’s Lodge, a great place to start. Our visit was very enjoyable. The room was clean and comfortable, it was convenient to get to town, the breakfast was very good. My wife and I really enjoyed our stay. Kinsale was a place great place to start our trip around Ireland and the Friar’s Lodge was an excellent place for our first night.
